Abstract: This paper, based on the perspective of industrial ecosystem, distinguishes efficiency-centered and novelty-centered BMI, and then explores the internal relations among strategic orientation, BMI and business performance. By analyzing empirical data collected from 192 manufacturing SMEs in China, the paper finds that BMI plays the complete intermediary role on the relationship of strategic orientation and business performance; market orientation positively impacts efficiency-centered BMI, but technology orientation positively affects efficiency-centered and novelty-centered BMI; efficiency-centered BMI exerts positive effects on market and financial performance, while novelty-centered BMI just has positive impact on financial performance.
